BUILDING A FOUNDATION FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Around the world, poor countries bear a disproportionate burden of poor health: malaria, respiratory infections, HIV/AIDS, diarrheal diseases, maternal mortality, and a host of other ailments cause enormous suffering and premature death. In these same regions, most people lack clean water or sanitation, poor harvests have created endemic hunger, and economic growth has been negligible for decades.
This intersection of misfortune is no accident. When disease and ill health cripple large segments of a country’s working population, economic progress is impaired as well. Moreover, this dynamic also functions in reverse: poverty and underdevelopment lead to poorer nutrition, lack of preventive and curative care, and diminished overall public health. The poorest of the poor not only face overwhelming rates of disease and high mortality, but they also often lack the vital tools – whether fertilizer, education, medicine, clean water, or basic credit – that are essential stepping stones out of poverty.
Based at Columbia University's Earth Institute, The Center for Global Health and Economic Development (CGHED) addresses these critical issues.
Through the Access Project, the Millennium Villages Project, and other initiatives, CGHED mobilizes global health programs that enable low resource countries to develop quality health systems for the poor, promote sustainable economic development, and achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
